Brief History of Reflexology
Reflexology dates back as far as 2500 B.C. Early Chinese, Japanese, Indians, Russians and the Egyptians worked on the feet to promote good health. Zone Therapy, as it is known today, was credited to Dr. William Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald divided he body into 10 longitudinal energy zones with five relating to the right side of the body and five on the left side with each line terminating at the souls of the feet and palms of the hands. Eunice Ingham furthered Fitzgerald’s research by correlating the anatomical structure of the body with the energy zones located on the feet. She found that the feet provided a mirror image of the entire body because the greater sensitivity of the feet enhanced the treatment.
What is Reflexology?
Reflexology is a unique, natural and alternative therapy which uses varying degrees of pressure utilizing thumb, finger and hand techniques without using any oil or lotion. Reflexology has been shown to help restore the flow of energy throughout the entire body. There are reflexes in our hands and feet that, when stimulated with pressure and manipulation, nerve function and blood supply may be improved which may alleviate stress and other health problems.
Benefits of Reflexology
Some of the benefits of reflexology are: stress reduction, reduces blood pressure, increases circulation, improves immune system, stimulates nerve function, increases relaxation, reduces pain levels, aids in post-operative recovery, complements cancer care, and eases pregnancy and delivery. Reflexology also brings relief to a wide range of acute and chronic conditions such as arthritis, back pain, bowel disorders, gynecological problems, insomnia, muscle tension, respiratory disorders and much more.
Whenever the energy currents flow through the longitudinal zones build up at certain points, they create an accumulation of energy, or blockage, at those points. These energy blocks interrupt the smooth flow of energy throughout the body, causing pain, disorder, disease or whatever problems that may require healing. Reflexology, using specific pressure techniques on the feet (or hands) is able to remove the energy blocks allowing the energy to flow freely and return the body back to harmony and balance.
