What is Cranial Sacral Therapy?
Cranial Sacral Therapy (CST) is a gentle hands-on approach to bodywork that releases tensions deep in the body to relieve pain and dysfunction and improve whole-body health and performance. It focuses on the bones of the head, spinal column, and the underlying structures. Cranial sacral therapy is performed on a massage table with the client fully clothed.
The cranial sacral system produces a rhythm, much like the cardiac and circulatory systems. This movement is referred to as the cranial rhythm. Compressions and restrictions reduce, or inhibit the cranial rhythm. These restrictions and compressions may even show up as areas of non-movement. Compressions and restrictions in the cranial sacral system are caused by injury or trauma and if not corrected can cause dysfunction and dis-ease in the body.
The Cranial Sacral system is made up of the following structures: brain and spinal cord, meningeal membranes, cerebrospinal fluid and bones of the head, spinal column and sacrum. The brain creates all thought and movement and the spinal cord relays information to the rest of the body. The meningeal membranes envelop the brain and spinal cord and contain the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). The CSF is responsible for lubricating and cushioning the brain and spinal cord. The cranial sacral system is responsible for the production, circulation and reabsorption of the CSF. The bones serve as handles to what is going on underneath.
Cranial sacral therapy can be used alone or incorporated with other bodywork. Cranial Sacral therapy has both linear and esoteric aspects. We deal with a physical system and use energetic techniques to do the work. Using a light touch that uses no more than 5 grams of pressure (about the weight of a nickel) CST helps to release restrictions in the soft tissues that surround the central nervous system. CST can be used as a preventative health measure for its ability to bolster resistance to disease and it is effective for a wide range of medical problems associated with pain and dysfunction.
The Central Nervous System (CNS) is heavily influenced by the cranial sacral system-the membranes and fluid that surround, protect and nourish the brain and spinal cord. When your body experiences stressors and strains your body tries to compensate which often causes body tissues to tighten and distort the cranial sacral system which in turn causes tension around the brain and spinal cord creating restrictions.
Evaluating the various locations of the body and testing for ease of motion and rhythm of the cerebrospinal fluid around the brain and spinal cord, soft touch techniques are used to release restrictions in any tissues influencing the cranial sacral system.
